  <dc:title>FAIR Computational Workflows</dc:title>
  <dc:identifier>doi:10.11922/sciencedb.j00104.00071</dc:identifier>
  <dc:language>en</dc:language>
<dc:description>Computational workflows describe the complex multi-step methods that are used for data collection, data preparation, analytics, predictive modelling, and simulation that lead to new data products. They can inherently contribute to the FAIR data principles: by processing data according to established metadata; by creating metadata themselves during the processing of data; and by tracking and recording data provenance. These properties aid data quality assessment and contribute to secondary data usage. Moreover, workflows are digital objects in their own right. Figure 1 shows&amp;ensp;a&amp;ensp;workflow&amp;ensp; for&amp;ensp;detecting&amp;ensp;variants&amp;ensp; in&amp;ensp;genome&amp;ensp;sequences.&amp;ensp; The&amp;ensp;workflow&amp;ensp; is&amp;ensp;specified&amp;ensp; in&amp;ensp; the&amp;ensp;Common&amp;ensp;Workflow&amp;ensp;Language,&amp;ensp;displayed&amp;ensp;using&amp;ensp;the&amp;ensp;CWL&amp;ensp;Viewer.&amp;ensp;Any&amp;ensp;CWL&amp;ensp;compliant&amp;ensp;WfMS&amp;ensp;execution&amp;ensp;engine&amp;ensp;should&amp;ensp;be&amp;ensp;able&amp;ensp;to&amp;ensp;execute&amp;ensp; this&amp;ensp;standardized&amp;ensp;workflow&amp;ensp;description&amp;ensp;and&amp;ensp;obtain&amp;ensp; the&amp;ensp;same&amp;ensp; results&amp;ensp; independent&amp;ensp;of&amp;ensp; their&amp;ensp;underlying&amp;ensp;infrastructure, for instance using Toil executed on SLURM, or REANA on Kubernetes.</dc:description>
