<dc:title>Refractive Index Matching and Optical Performance Enhancement of Y2O3-MnMgO Nanocomposite Ceramics via Mn Solid Solution Design</dc:title>

<dc:description>In this work, for the first time, Y2O3-MnxMg1-xO nanocomposite ceramics with tailored refractive-index matching were designed and fabricated to improve the optical performance of Y2O3-MgO composites in the visible-infrared region. Based on effective medium approximation (EMA) models, the optimal MnO concentrations for refractive-index matching with Y2O3 were predicted, and three representative compositions (x=0.34, 0.38, and 0.43) were selected for experimental verification. MnxMg1-xO solid-solution powders were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method, and complete Mn2+ incorporation into the MgO lattice was confirmed by XRD refinement and XPS analysis. The resulting Y2O3-MnxMg1-xO nanocomposite ceramics exhibited a dense and homogeneous microstructure and consisted exclusively of the Y2O3 and MnxMg1-xO phases, with no detectable impurity or additional crystalline phases. With increasing Mn doping, lattice constants, theoretical density, refractive-index, and hardness gradually increased due to lattice distortion and solid-solution strengthening. Among all compositions, Y2O3-Mn0.38Mg0.62O showed the most homogeneous grain-size distribution and the best optical performance, achieving nearly 80% transmittance in the 3-5 μm mid-infrared range. In addition, Mn incorporation significantly broadened the near-infrared cutoff edge from 1750 nm in undoped Y2O3-MgO ceramics to approximately 1000 nm, demonstrating that refractive-index matching through Mn solid solution is an effective strategy for enhancing near-infrared transparency in Y2O3-MgO nanocomposite ceramics.</dc:description>
