<dc:title>Data and code for: Conspecific negative density dependence in tree resprouting across an elevational gradient</dc:title>
  <dc:identifier>doi:10.57760/sciencedb.010vz</dc:identifier>
  <dc:language>en</dc:language>
<dc:description>Resprouting enables woody plants to persist under environmental stress or after disturbance, but the relative and interactive effects of biotic and abiotic factors on resprouting in low-disturbance montane forests remain poorly resolved. We modelled the number of resprouting stems per individual as a function of diameter at breast height (DBH), conspecific and heterospecific neighbour density, topographic wetness index (TWI), and solar radiation index (SRI) across six 1-ha forest plots along an elevational gradient in Baima Snow Mountain, southwest China. Conspecific neighbour density was negatively associated with the number of resprouting stems in five of the six forest communities, whereas heterospecific neighbour density was not significantly associated with resprouting in any community. The effects of DBH, TWI, and SRI varied among forest communities, and topography further modified neighbourhood effects in three of the six communities. These findings provide evidence for density dependence in vegetative regeneration and show that its strength can vary with abiotic conditions. The archived dataset contains the individual-level tree and shrub data, neighbourhood variables, and topographic variables used in the analyses, together with R scripts for model fitting, diagnostics, hierarchical partitioning, interaction predictions, correlation analyses, and figure generation.</dc:description>
