<dc:title>A global integrated spider venom dataset linking protein sequences, traits, and geographic distributions</dc:title>

<dc:description>Spider venoms have significant potential for pharmacological, agricultural, and biotechnological applications. However, knowledge of spider venoms remains limited and biased, as fewer than 1% of described species have been examined. Furthermore, rapid advances in high-throughput sequencing and ongoing taxonomic revisions highlight the need for an updated quantitative assessment of venom and toxin research across spider species. Here, we present a multi-dimensional dataset of spider venom-associated information compiled from 1,140 scientific publications and the UniProt database. The dataset encompasses 358 valid spider species for which venom-related data are available and comprises three interconnected modules: (1) a trait module consisting of species-level ecological, behavioral, and morphological attributes; (2) a protein module containing 10,986 venom-associated sequences, each classified into functional categories and assigned a standardized evidence tier; (3) an occurrence module providing 44,354 quality-controlled geographic records. By integrating protein sequences, functional traits, and geographic distributions, this resource will support investigations of the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of spider venoms, as well as target identification for drug discovery and biotechnology.# This repository contains multiple data files. # Furthermore, it should be noted that the sequences within Dataset 1 and Dataset 2 are identical to those presented in Table S3.Detailed file descriptions are as follows:*****1. Supplementary_table.xlsxThis file serves as the supplementary material for the associated paper, containing four sheets titled as follows: Table S1. Bibliographic dataset of research articles related to spider venom.Table S2. Functional trait database for spider species investigated in venom toxin studies.Table S3. Dataset of venom-related protein sequences for surveyed 358 spider species.Table S4. Filtered distribution records using spThin package.*****2. Script.zipThis file contains four scirpts: (1) the script for downloading species distribution points from GBIF; (2) the script for batch downloading taxonomic literature from the World Spider Catalog (WSC) based on species names; (3) the script for calculating species richness using the letsR package. The scirpts are titled as follows:1.download_records_from_GBlF.R1.1deal_distribution_sites_spThin.R2.get_pdf_from_NMBE.py3.species_richness.R*****3. Dataset 1.zipThis archive contains four sequence files in FASTA format, which consist of spider venom-related protein sequences extracted from the literature. The sequences are categorized into four levels based on the experimental evidence supporting their acquisition, with each file corresponding to one level. Each file includes the protein sequences, along with their associated species information and source literature DOIs.(1) Tier 1, directly isolated from native venom and supported by functional assays or experimental structural characterization; (2) Tier 2, directly detected in secreted venom via MS-based proteomics or peptide sequencing, but with limited functional validation; (3) Tier 3, supported by venom-gland transcriptomic, cDNA cloning, or recombinant/synthetic evidence, without native venom protein extraction; (4) Tier 4, predicted in silico based on genomic data, sequence homology, database annotation, or computational analysis without direct venom evidence. The FASTA files were titled as follows:Tier_1_toxin_protein.fastaTier_2_toxin_protein.fastaTier_3_toxin_protein.fastaTier_4_toxin_protein.fasta*****4. Dataset 2.zipThis folder contains four FASTA files of spider venom-related protein sequences obtained from the UniProt database. The sequences are divided into four evidence levels (one file per level). The FASTA files were titled as follows:uniprot_tier1.fasuniprot_tier2.fasuniprot_tier3.fasuniprot_tier4.fas*****5. Dataset 3.zipThis folder includes 377 taxonomic description papers obtained from NMBE (https://wsc.nmbe.ch/). Functional traits (e.g., body length and leg length) of the 358 investigated species were extracted from these sources.</dc:description>
