<dc:title>Long exposure effect of silica fume and fly ash on corrosion characteristics of steel rebars in mortars</dc:title>
  <dc:identifier>doi:10.57760/sciencedb.35942</dc:identifier>
  <dc:language>en</dc:language>
<dc:description>the effect of partial replacement of Portland cement by two commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), namely fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) added in mortars on the protective properties of the passive film formed on the surface of steel rebars after their prolonged exposure (9.5 years) in chloride ponded mortars. The results revealed that both SCMs during the initial periods of exposure of rebars enhanced the protective properties of the passive film. However, after longer wet/dry treatments in chloride solution, the stability of the film was adversely affected in the presence of SF, causing considerable deterioration of protective properties. On the other hand, FA maintained stable passivity on the steel surface. After 9.5 years of exposure, SF added mortars, cracked, and embedded rebars experienced severe localized and uniform corrosion. Different analytical techniques, namely scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, were used to explain the causes for this finding. In addition to this, the blending of these two SCMs was also studied to examine their effects on chloride permeability and compressive strength. The data generated using the above-described analytical techniques helped to understand the interesting mechanism of SCMs observed on the passive film that will surely lead to a better understanding of the effect of SCMs on corrosion.</dc:description>
