<dc:title>A meta-analytic dataset on the effects of organic fertilizer application on soil pH in Chinese paddy fields</dc:title>

<dc:description>This dataset was compiled for the meta-analysis study titled "Effects of Organic Fertilizer Application on Soil pH in Chinese Paddy Fields," aiming to systematically evaluate the long-term effects of organic fertilization on soil acidification in paddy ecosystems and to identify key influencing factors. The dataset was constructed through a rigorous literature screening and data extraction process. Peer-reviewed journal articles published before January 10, 2026, were systematically retrieved from two major literature databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for Chinese-language publications and Web of Science (WOS) for English-language publications. The search strategy combined keywords related to organic amendments ("organic fertilizer," "straw," "manure," "crop residue," or "cover crop") with terms targeting soil pH responses ("soil pH" or "soil acidification"). To ensure analytical validity, eligible studies were required to meet all of the following criteria: (1) the study subject must be a paddy ecosystem with rice as the primary crop, excluding vegetable or other non-rice cropping systems; (2) the experiments must have been conducted within China; (3) both control and treatment groups were established under identical environmental conditions; (4) the number of experimental replicates was no fewer than three; and (5) the experiment duration was at least three years to minimize interference from short-term fluctuations. Following this screening protocol, 84 studies (40 in Chinese and 44 in English) were ultimately included, from which 560 paired observations were extracted. Means and standard deviations were primarily obtained from data presented in tables, with a portion derived through digital extraction from figures in the main text or supplementary materials. To harmonize pH measurements across studies, soil pH values determined in KCl or CaCl₂ solutions were converted to water-extracted pH (pH-H₂O) using previously established empirical relationships: pH-H₂O = 0.74 × pH-KCl + 1.96 and pH-H₂O = 0.86 × pH-CaCl₂ + 1.65.The dataset comprises 10 data tables in Microsoft Excel format (.xlsx), covering the complete analytical chain from raw observations to synthesized summaries. The core data tables include four tables with initial soil pH as the control ("data1初始-CK," "data2初始-M," "data3初始-NPKM," and "data4初始-NPKM0（等养分）") and three tables with unfertilized treatment as the control ("data5不施肥-M," "data6不施肥-NPKM," and "data7不施肥-NPKM0（等养分）"), corresponding to three organic fertilization regimes: organic manure alone (M), chemical fertilizer combined with organic manure (NPKM), and isonitrogenous substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure (NPKM0). In addition, two summary tables ("重要性初始为对照" and "重要性不施肥为对照") integrate effect size estimates across all treatments to facilitate comprehensive analyses, while the "参考文献" table provides complete bibliographic information for the 84 included studies. Each data table contains the following core fields: reference information, geographic coordinates of experimental sites, number of replicates, means and standard deviations for both control and treatment groups, effect size (lnR) and its variance (V), as well as a suite of covariates including soil texture, mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, initial soil pH, soil organic matter content, total nitrogen content, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, fertilization duration, rice cropping system (single rice SR/double rice DR/rice-upland rotation RU), presence or absence of leguminous green manure in the cropping system (LE/NLE), and organic fertilizer type (plant-derived P/animal-derived A/mixed-source M). Missing data, primarily arising from unreported standard deviations or unrecorded covariates in some original studies, are denoted as "NA" and were not imputed.</dc:description>
