<dc:title>Factors Influencing Home-Based Disabled Elderly' Participation in Reablement : A Qualitative Exploration from the Perspective of the Model of Human Occupation</dc:title>
  <dc:identifier>doi:10.57760/sciencedb.42847</dc:identifier>
  <dc:language>en</dc:language>
<dc:description>Purpose: Grounded in the Model of Human Occupation, this study identifies core factors influencing home-based disabled elders&amp;rsquo; participation in reablement in China and reveals the role of Chinese cultural values, to inform culturally tailored interventions. Methods: A qualitative explorative design with one-on-one semi-structured interviews was conducted with 20 participants (disabled elders, primary caregivers, community staff) in a Beijing community. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed within 24 hours. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA 20.4 via an inductive-deductive approach. Results: Four themes and 11 sub-themes emerged: Motivation (value-driven by dignity preservation and family burden reduction; interest-driven persistence; self-efficacy affecting confidence); Habituation (behavioural inertia independent of roles; active participation driven by family role responsibility); Personal capacity (physical limitations and cognitive level affecting reablement learning); and Environment (community facilities/services, home renovation/assistive devices, caregiving philosophy differences, family companionship/emotional support). Conclusion: Chinese cultural values profoundly shape motivation and habits, with personal value closely tied to family roles. The conflict between traditional &amp;ldquo;giving-oriented care&amp;rdquo; (shaped by filial piety) and reablement orientation constitutes a cultural barrier. The study reveals an internal mechanism&amp;mdash;&amp;ldquo;volition awakening&amp;mdash;habituation reliance&amp;mdash;capacity adaptation &amp;mdash;environment support&amp;rdquo;. Intervention design must acknowledge local cultural definitions of personal value and integrate family responsibility and filial piety into reablement programmes to achieve cultural adaptation, thereby effectively promoting active participation among home-based disabled elders.</dc:description>
