<dc:title>A Numerical Optimization Method for Determining the Mechanical Center of Beam Position Monitors Based on Calibration Data</dc:title>

<dc:description>[Background] Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) are key components of beam diagnostics systems in high-energy synchrotron radiation facilities such as the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS). Accurate determination of the mechanical center of BPMs is essential for ensuring the precision of beam position measurements. Conventional methods for determining the BPM mechanical center rely on ideal geometric symmetry assumptions of electrodes, require additional measurement procedures, and are prone to introducing systematic errors. [Purpose] This study aims to develop a practical method for determining the mechanical center of BPMs based solely on calibration data, suitable for engineering applications. [Methods] A numerical calculation method based on BPM calibration data was proposed. Multiple sets of simulated beam position and electrode signal data obtained during the automatic BPM calibration process were used to construct an error function with mechanical center offsets as optimization variables. Numerical optimization algorithms were then applied to solve for the mechanical center position of the BPM. [Results] The method was applied to calibration data from 15 circular button-type BPMs in the HEPS storage ring. The calculated electro-mechanical offsets exhibited a standard deviation of 109.5 µm in the horizontal direction and 137.8 µm in the vertical direction. Repeatability tests with 10 independent calculations for each BPM yielded standard deviations of less than 10 µm in both directions. [Conclusions] The proposed method requires no additional measurement procedures and does not rely on idealized geometric symmetry assumptions. It can be naturally integrated into existing BPM calibration workflows.</dc:description>
