<dc:title>A dataset of phytoplankton cell density in vertical profiles and surface waters of Lake Fuxian, 2018–2025</dc:title>

<dc:description>This dataset compiles long-term phytoplankton monitoring data collected in Lake Fuxian by the Lake Fuxian Ecological Research Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences, from April 2018 to October 2025. Sampling was conducted mainly in January, April, July, and October each year, covering a total of 31 monitoring periods. The dataset comprises six phytoplankton phyla, including Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Dinophyta, Cryptophyta, and Chrysophyta, with a total of 57 taxa, of which 51 were identified to the genus level and 6 to the species level. Phytoplankton taxa were identified microscopically based on cell morphology, size, and colony structure, and cell density was recorded for each taxon in units of cells/L. The dataset includes vertical-profile samples collected at depths of 0–50 m at station FS1 and surface-water samples collected at stations FS1–FS5, comprising a total of 310 samples. The data are stored in Microsoft Excel (xlsx) format and organized into 13 worksheets, including 10 original wide-format data sheets, one taxonomic information sheet, one standardized long-format data sheet, and one data-description sheet. The standardized long-format dataset contains 17670 sample–taxon observation records. Taxonomic names and cell-density data were standardized across sampling stations, water depths, and monitoring periods, allowing the dataset to systematically characterize long-term changes, seasonal differences, vertical distributions, and spatial variations in surface phytoplankton communities in Lake Fuxian. Standardized procedures were applied throughout sample collection, fixation, sedimentation and concentration, microscopic identification, and enumeration. Each sample was counted at least twice, with the relative deviation between duplicate counts controlled within ±15%. Quality assurance was further supported through sample reanalysis, calibration of microscopes and microscopic field areas, personnel training, and inter-analyst comparisons. This dataset provides fundamental information for investigating the long-term dynamics, seasonal variation, and vertical niche differentiation of phytoplankton communities in deep lakes and can also support lake ecological assessment, aquatic ecosystem conservation, and environmental management.</dc:description>
