<dc:title>Acid-Catalyzed Construction of High-Performance Polybenzoxazine-Based Carbon Aerogels with Tunable Multiscale Structures</dc:title>

<dc:description>Carbon aerogels are promising porous carbon materials owing to their low density and hierarchical pore structures; however, their practical deployment remains hindered by complex drying strategies and insufficient structural robustness of the carbon framework. Herein, we report a catalyst-directed polymerization pathway engineering strategy for the construction of polybenzoxazine-derived carbon aerogels via an acid-catalyzed sol–gel process combined with ambient-pressure drying. By systematically tuning the hydrochloric acid dosage, the relative participation of carbocation- and iminium-derived crosslinking reactions was regulated, giving rise to precursor networks with distinct crosslinking densities and structural compactness. These chemically defined precursor architectures were largely inherited during carbonization, resulting in carbon frameworks with distinct microcrystalline continuity and hierarchical pore structures. The optimized aerogels achieved densities of 0.224–0.308 g·cm-3, compressive strengths up to 5.80 MPa, and thermal conductivities of 0.072–0.096 W·m-1·K-1, demonstrating that microcrystalline reinforcement of the pore-wall skeleton can enhance mechanical performance without severely compromising thermal insulation. This work establishes polymerization pathway engineering at the precursor stage as a governing principle for microstructural inheritance and carbon-framework reinforcement, providing chemical insight into the rational design of polymer-derived porous carbons with balanced mechanical and thermal functionalities. </dc:description>
