<dc:title>A Three-Wave Longitudinal Dataset of Reading-Related Cognitive Skills and Reading Abilities in Rural Chinese School-Aged Children</dc:title>

  <dc:language>en</dc:language>
<dc:description>This dataset was collected as part of a longitudinal study examining the development of reading-related cognitive skills and reading abilities in rural Chinese school-aged children. Participants were recruited from Grades 1&amp;ndash;3 at a rural primary school in Binzhou, Shandong Province, China. A three-wave longitudinal design was employed, with approximately six months between consecutive assessments and a total follow-up period of one year. The dataset contains measures of reading-related cognitive skills, reading abilities, and general cognitive ability. Reading-related cognitive skills include phonological awareness, orthographic awareness, morphological awareness, and rapid automatized naming (RAN), assessed using phoneme deletion, real-character/noncharacter judgment, morpheme production, and digit RAN tasks, respectively. Both accuracy and response time measures were obtained from the orthographic judgment task. Reading abilities were assessed using Chinese character recognition, word-list reading fluency, and a three-minute sentence-reading task indexing reading comprehension efficiency. General cognitive ability was assessed using Raven&amp;rsquo;s Standard Progressive Matrices.94 children (55 boys and 39 girls) completed all three waves. The dataset can be used to examine developmental changes in reading-related cognitive skills and reading abilities during the early school years and to investigate the longitudinal predictive associations of phonological awareness, orthographic awareness, morphological awareness, and rapid automatized naming with subsequent character recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension efficiency. The data may also provide a useful resource for further research on the cognitive mechanisms underlying Chinese reading development in rural school-aged children.</dc:description>
